Here is something you may not have know: "PANAMA HATS DO NOT COME FROM Panama" Back in the late 1800, when the US personnel & American engineers were building the Panama canal, they bought these wonderful soft, crushable hand braided toquilla straw hats from Ecuadorian manufacturers that came regularly to do business in Panama. Once these hats were in The USA they were recognized as "Panama hats." And that’s where it all started. Panama hats are hand-braided hats made from toquilla straw. A high quality Panama straw hat is so tightly hand woven that it may take up to 12 months to finish, and it can only be hand woven very early in the morning when it is damp & humid, before the sun comes up. |
There is no standardized grading system for Panama hats. Different sellers often use the same numbers or terms to describe very different hats. Many sellers use numbers to describe Panama hat "grades." Unfortunately, they use different formulas to calculate their grade numbers. So a Grade 10 from supplier 1 is not the same quality as a Grade 10 from supplier 2.
The common practice of different sellers using the same numeric or word "hat grades" to describe your hat is very different from supplier to supplier, therefore you must only rely on the experience, availability & service of you Panama hat supplier. |

Raffia: created from the leaves of an African palm tree, this natural fiber is on the rise with a brand new look. (What's Hot Style).
RAFFIA [raffia] or raffia, fiber obtained from the raffia palm of Madagascar, exported for various uses, such manufacturing of hats. The raffia palm (Raphia farinifera or R. ruffia ) is crowned with enormous leaves that may be as much as 65-ft (19.8 m) long and composed of 80 to 100 leaflets.

The fiber, which is soft, pliable, strong, and nonshrinking when wet, is torn in thin strips from these leaves. After being dried in the sun, raffia takes on a yellowish-tan hue, but it is often dyed other colors.
